About me and my business:

I'm a Chartered Accountant and proud to be associated with the Grid.  In addition to doing all of the usual accountancy, tax and planning work for private clients I've been able to help a number of Grid members at no cost to themselves by tapping into Business Link funding for one to one appointments.  Things we usually cover are:

1. Business Plan - how robust is it, have we thought of everything?
2. Legal form - what's right for me?
3. Pricing - how do I price and sell?
4. All sorts of other things such as personal tax and general business questions

The Grid also supported a Business Link Pilot called Fast Start designed to help businesses in their first few weeks of trading - it aimed to cover the real difficulties businesses face when they start trading.  It received great feedback and again helped a number of members.

What makes me get out of bed.....

Seeing my clients succeed - I value every client interaction and it really makes my day when someone's had a one to one or attended a course and comes back a year later wondering what to do with their profits!

My Worst Nighmare

Clients who don't follow my advice and even worse when I have to bill for resolving the issue to get it right!  Tax compliance is an increasingly complex area and the penalties get tougher every year, its vital to take good sound advice and follow it!

The biggest Challenges facing those going into Business....

1. Under Pricing- most new businesses under price and find it very difficult to increase prices - good solid planning and market research are essential
2. Lack of support - it can be quite lonely juggling lots of activities - use the Grid and its support network
3. Funding - obtaining finance in certain sectors can be quite tight so it’s vital to have a robust business case

And finally... tips to succeed

1. Make sure you have a good support network
2. There are lots of free resources - sometimes too many, use them
3. Learn how to run a business - what I find is people are great at what they do but sometimes lack the skills to run a business
4. Keep your business and personal finances separate - it keeps your accountancy fees down!
5. If in doubt ask - there's no such thing as a stupid question!
